Ruby is a teenage girl living in the hidden southeastern town of Wisteria. As a child, she was left homeless when war tore through her hometown, leaving her with no connections except her much younger childhood friend Leaf. Her life was changed when the alchemist Raygen gave her a home and a purpose in his so-called paradise. From then on she dedicated herself to repaying the debt she owed him, buying fully into his meritocratic ideology of "equivalent exchange". When the Elrics proved that Raygen had been deceiving the townspeople for his own gain and engaging in secret human trafficking, she was devastated, but resolved to carve her own path in life and defeated her former idol.
Appearance[]
Ruby has black eyes and wears her black hair in a long ponytail. She's slender, though muscular, and tall for her age,[1] but not too much taller than Ed[2] and is described as looking a little older than the brothers. She usually dresses in military surplus gear.
Personality[]
Much like Edward, Ruby is brash and stubborn. Though outwardly confident, while she worked for Raygen her entire life revolved around him, taking his every word as gospel and even denying her favorite color, the color of the flowers that had grown in her hometown, because he preferred bolder ones—despite the fact that letting someone else define her went against the advice he gave her in the first place.[3] Because of him she came to believe that the only way to move forward was to separate herself completely from her past, which she associated with weakness. It was only after he was exposed as corrupt that she grew to accept that strength means nothing on its own.
Relationships[]
Raygen - After he rescued her from poverty, Ruby idolized Raygen to an unhealthy degree, forming her entire identity around him and refusing to let anyone question his actions. The Elrics and Leaf helped her to see through his façade and finally start thinking for herself.
Leaf - She knew him from a very young age, but after their home was destroyed she came to resent him as a reminder of the pain of their shared past. Unable to keep up with the demanding pace of the town's job market, Leaf dedicated his time to growing white flowers on the cliff above Wisteria in the hopes of reminding her of the compassionate person she used to be. In the end, with the Elrics' help, he was able to get through to her.
Edward Elric - The two clashed from the moment they met. Most of their interactions were spent bickering. Still, they were able to work together in the end, and Ruby finally thanked him as he left Wisteria.
Alphonse Elric - Unlike his brother, Alphonse was impressed by Ruby's strong personality and the two began to develop feelings for one another during the Elrics' stay in town. Still, though Al respected Ruby and she tried her best to win him over, he refused to join her and follow Raygen. After Raygen and the bandits were arrested, Al promised to come visit Wisteria again someday, and she gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Abilities[]
She's a good enough martial artist to defeat multiple grown men at a time, using a fighting style she developed herself.[4]
