Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki

Reminder: do not use WebToon images on articles without saying it's from it. The WebToon adaptation does not use Arakawa's original manga colour schemes, it instead uses Brotherhood's colours in all instances except for manga-exclusive characters.

This page is an official Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki policy.
Failure to follow this policy will result in removal of images in violation of the policy. Repeated failure to comply may result in warnings or disciplinary action, including short-term or long-term edit bans.

General

  • Do not upload any files that violate the Terms of Use. Every copyrighted file (images and videos) used on Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki must fall under a fair use rationale, under United States copyright law. Meaning, that in order for this wiki to legally use copyrighted files without asking permission from the copyright holder, every copyrighted file must only be used for visual identification/informational purposes and have a fair use copyright tag on the file description page.
  • All images uploaded to the Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki must be canon within the Fullmetal Alchemist universe. Images can be from the manga, either anime series, films, any of various video games, or real-life images connected to Fullmetal Alchemist. The Fullmetal Alchemist Wiki does not allow fanon/fanart images to be uploaded, and all images uploaded must be appropriate.
  • Do not upload duplicate images. Before uploading an image please check here as well as some pages around the wiki you think your image may be to see that it does not already exist. Do not upload duplicate images unless your image is better quality, in which case use the "Upload a new version of this file" link on the image's file description page rather than re-uploading from scratch. Do not use the re-upload button to upload a different picture, in that case upload the picture from scratch.
    • EXCEPTION: You may upload a duplicate if it is a higher quality version of a previous image and you are unable to directly replace the old image. For instance, if a file was uploaded as a jpeg, it is impossible to "update" the image with a PNG due to being a different file type. In such a case, you may remove the link to the jpeg file and add a link to the higher quality PNG in its place.
  • All images uploaded must be of decent quality. Ideally, all static images should be in PNG format. Images that are too small, pixelated, or contain subtitles, should not be uploaded. Images with watermarks are NOT allowed unless they are a watermark of an official company (e.g. Square Enix). Anime screenshots with watermarks indicating the screenshot was taken from an illegal streaming service will result in disciplinary action taken against the uploader.
    • EXCEPTION: Anime and Movie screenshots do not allow watermarks or site logos in the corner (e.g. from sites like Patreon, the old Funimation website, Hulu, etc.) as there's just no reason for them. All such screenshots should be able to easily be found without watermark.
    • EXCEPTION: Images that contain OFFICIAL subtitles are permitted if, and only if, they are posted to show writing that is in said subtitles. For instance, some characters have variably spelt names (like Sheska/Sciezka) and might use a specific spelling in subtitles that is relevant enough to be shown on the article. Alternatively, if you notice a glaring error exists in official subtitles, you may want to screenshot the offending line to showcase it on the relevant article.
    • EXCEPTION: Images that only exist in bad or small quality are permitted. An example of this would be a jpeg image that exists only on an official FMA website. Since there's nowhere a higher quality image can be obtained, the low quality image can be uploaded as is.

Rules on EditingEnhancing/Upscaling Small Images

If an image is particularly small (e.g. an in-game sprite) you may want to upscale it so that it is more easily viewable.

  • You may NOT use AI enhancement under any circumstance. AI will alter the image beyond a simple upscale, adding detail where there was none or removing it where it actually existed.
  • Similarly, do not edit or "clean up" images yourself to remove blur, grain, backgrounds, etc. even if no AI is used.
    • Cropping an image is generally the only edit which is considered acceptable. Cropping an image is useful for things like character icons and infobox images, as well as for isolating a single panel from a manga page. No further edits besides the crop should be made.
  • When upscaling an image, make sure to do it in multiples of 2 so that the image does not become deformed or stretched. For example, a 37x39 image should become a 74x78 (x2) or 148x156 (x4) sized image. If the program allows you to resize by specific percentages, 200% or 400% are always safe options to use.
  • Do not use any "filter" or "interpolation method" when uploading. Most art programs that allow image resizing typically use a filter by default (examples of filter names include Cubic, Linear, Bilinear, Bicubic, etc.) which will make the image blurrier than it should be. Typically, this is turned off by using "none", "no filter", or "Nearest Neighbour".

Character Icons / Infobox Images

  • Character icon (avatar) images (for use on things like the Main Page) must be perfect squares so that they scale properly.
  • Make sure that the image starts no lower than just beneath the character's shoulders. The height may extend up to the top of their head, just above their head, or slightly onto their forehead depending on which cropping looks best for the image. The entire top of the head/hair is not necessary to have in the image, as long as the face is completely in frame.
  • Front-facing or 3/4 view images are used for icons. Others perspectives (like side profile) are only allowed in icons if the former don't exist, or if it's the clearest view of the character.
  • If a good/appealing fullbody image of a character doesn't exist, use an image following the same guidelines as icon images.
  • When using fullbody images, or if using a mix of fullbody and square icon images in one infobox, it is important to make sure that the widths of images in all tabs are consistent so that the infobox does not constantly change sizes between tabs. This can alternatively be alleviated by manually specifying the images' widths on the page itself.

User Pages

User pages are exempt from many of the above rules. They can contain fanon images, user artwork, images not related to FMA, and real-life images. When uploading an image not in accordance with the above rules for use on user pages, it should be immediately placed on your user page so it is not removed. However, all images on user pages must still be appropriate. Screenshots with watermarks indicating an illegal streaming site was used, for instance, will still result in disciplinary action even if it was only uploaded to your user page.
