Corniche Royce (コーニッシュ・ロイス Kōnisshu Roisu?), most commonly referred to by the nickname Cony (コニィ Konyi?), is a character who appeared in the Game Boy Advance game Fullmetal Alchemist: Stray Rondo. She is later given the title of Tuning Alchemist (調律の錬金術師 Chōritsu no Renkinjutsushi?) upon becoming a State Alchemist.

Personality[]

Corniche is a sheltered young lady who grew up in the care of her home and has never left it before, longing to see the world. Despite her naivete, she is quite quick-witted and clever in tense situations. Relishing her older brother's favorite phrase, "Alchemist, Be Thou For The People", she wants to be of use to more people and become a State Alchemist to use her skills in alchemy to help improve the lives of others.

Role In the Story[]

Cony first appeared heading to Central City to apply to become a State Alchemist like her missing brother. During that time, her train gets hijacked by the terrorist Bald 's group which uses her as a hostage. The Elric brothers rescue her and learn that she heading towards Central for State Alchemy Exam. Cony decides to tag along Elrics as she hasn't traveled before and the train gets attacked by a Chimera and stops at a town named Viva. The trio rescues the town which is swarming with Chimeras but fail to find the culprit. They continue their journey towards the Central, where Cony realizes that she has forgotten her qualification essay. While she is insisting on her participation, King Bradley appears and sets up a condition for her certification- to beat Major Alex Louis Armstrong. Cony fails and Edward is summoned by King Bradley for a Chimera Extermination Mission in East City, which Cony decides to join in.

After investigating the Chimera incidents, Cony finds out her brother is alive and is the one orchestrating the terrorist attacks. After confronting him, Cony questions Lincor if he really is her brother who would hold the words 'Alchemist, Be Thou for the People' dear but Linor bluntly refuses of having any recollection of her and violently attacks the party. The party defeats Lincor but he refuses to give up. Ed sums up all the events and concludes that the power Lincor possess is not by using the Philosopher's Stone but by trading his precious memories with his sister.

Emboldened by the encouraging words of the deceased Aston Martins, Cony heals the party and chooses to fight her maddened brother. Lincor eventually dies while saying some parting thanks to his sister before his death. Back at Central HQ, the party recovers from their former friend's death and Cony is finally allowed to retake the State Alchemy Exam. Cony passes the exam and earns her brother's title 'The Tuning Alchemist'. She gladly accepts it and decides that she would recompense for her brother's wrongdoing.

Trivia[]

  • Cony follows the trend of non-canon female Fullmetal Alchemist characters in protagonist roles being given red or orange hair, being the second following Armony Eiselstein. Corniche herself would later be followed by Viola Amore and Julia Crichton.
    • She is also the only character of this group to make a prominent appearance in two separate pieces of media, being a major playable character in Stray Rondo and an optional playable character in Sonata of Memories. The only other character to appear in Fullmetal Alchemist media twice is Armony, and her second appearance is a minor, non-speaking cameo.
  • Her name is likely derived from the famous car manufacturer Rolls-Royce and their classic Corniche series of automobiles.
  • Across all continuities, Cony is so far the only known female State Alchemist.
  • Her full name is officially romanized as "Corniche Royce" in the status menu of Sonata of Memories. Even if it hadn't been, its intended spelling can easily be inferred as it references the vehicle, which is the case with many characters in the series. Her nickname, however, is more ambiguous as it has never been romanized officially, and could reasonably be translated as either "Connie" or "Cony". The fan translations use the latter.
  • In the English fan community her name has sometimes been erroneously stated to be Corniche R. Royce, however she is never given a middle name or initial in-game, and no such initial is given in any other known official source, Japanese or otherwise. This initial seems to have been added by fans simply because it better mimics the car brand name (Corniche Rolls-Royce).
